2018-2019 Grant Application

The nonprofit sector plays a critical role in the delivery of health and human services in Kerr County.  United Way of Kerr County works with a range of nonprofit organizations--from large agencies to small, community-based groups--providing funds for a variety of projects and initiatives aimed at improving lives, strengthening communities, and building a stronger Kerr County.

United Way understands that our city cannot thrive without a robust and effective nonprofit sector.  An important focus for us is strengthening the capacity of local nonprofits to efficiently and effectively deliver high-quality services. We're currently doing this via a number by providing annual grants to qualifying agencies.

Frequently Asked Questions

1.  What is Kerr County United Way?

Kerr County United Way began in the early 50's and was known as the Kerr County Community Chest. Several local business and civic leaders formed the Community Chest in order to consolidate the fund raising of various non-profit agencies into "one" fund raising drive instead of many smaller ones.

2.  How does my money work when given to the Kerr County United Way?

Kerr County United Way's official Campaign Drive begins in September and runs through August of the following year. Funds that are donated are allocated to specific local non-profit agencies that apply for grants. Our Board of Directors carefully reviews and interviews each agency that applies for a grant. Those grants are distributed on a quarterly basis. All funds distributed to these agencies are used only for Kerr County and the surrounding areas. By doing so, we can help meet the needs of our county and the hill country area.

3.  How do problems or issues associated with the United Way in other communities affect the policies of Kerr County United Way?

Kerr County United Way is managed by a board of directors, made up of volunteer business and civic leaders of Kerr County. Kerr County United Way is its own individual entity and does not abide by policies or procedures of other United Way offices. The policies and procedures are made up and implemented by our own Board of Directors and affect only Kerr County. In addition, all funds received for Kerr County United Way stay here in Kerr County and the surrounding area and are not distributed to other areas.

4. Does Kerr County United Way meet the most important community needs?

United Way goes beyond temporary fixes to create lasting change in communities around the world. By bringing people and organizations together around innovative solutions, we impact millions of lives every year.

Kerr County United Way meets some of the most important needs in our community. Together with the agencies we support, we help to provide food, shelter, clothing, medication and medical supplies.  We also help with utilities, education, protection and prevention from abuse, organ transplants, and many other essential services. Kerr County United Way helps everyone.

5.  Why do some Kerr County United Way agencies charge for services?

Kerr County United Way is a member of the United Way of America. The United Way logo is a registered trademark of the United Way of America and in order to use it for our fund-raising purposes, we must maintain a membership with United Way of America. This also allows us to participate in other campaigns that are held through corporate businesses that run annual United Way fund raising campaigns. The cost for this membership is approximately $425 per quarter. This is the only payment made to United Way of America.

6.  What is the amount of the campaign goal this year?

The Campaign Goal for 2017-2018 is $275,000, and will assist 26 local non-profit agencies.

7.  What if the giver objects to a particular agency?

Even though all agencies that receive funds from Kerr County United Way are approved by the board each year, someone may object to one agency or another for personal reasons. In that case, a contributor may make a designated contribution to a particular agency or selected agencies. This is not possible if you are giving through a payroll deduction program that is channeled through another United Way other than our local United Way. We also need that contributor's name and address so that we can let the designated agency know about the special request.

8.  Are contributions tax-deductible?

Kerr County United Way is a 501(c)3 organization and all contributions are tax deductible. When you give a donation, you will promptly receive a tax-deductible receipt for your records.
